Video Conferencing Overview

Stony Brook Medicine uses Microsoft Teams as the standard platform for video conferencing, virtual meetings, and collaboration. Teams provides a secure, integrated experience for communication across clinical, academic, and administrative environments. 

Microsoft Teams supports: 

  • Scheduled and ad-hoc meetings   
  • Video and audio conferencing   
  • Screen sharing and presentations   
  • Meeting recording and transcription   
  • Chat and team collaboration   

Zoom is another common video conferencing application, primarily used by Stony Brook University, as well as outside companies and vendors. Assistance with Zoom is also supported by SBMIT. 

Unsupported Legacy Systems

The following legacy conferencing technologies are no longer supported: 

  • Dedicated hardware codecs (including Polycom and Cisco systems)   
  • Legacy video conferencing platforms   
  • Dial-in or bridge-based video systems requiring specialized configurations   

Departments currently using unsupported systems should contact Technology Services to discuss upgrade options.
