System Administration

The Systems Administration Group manages and maintains a network of operating systems and storage systems on various hardware platforms at Stony Brook Medicine. These include the IBM ‘P’ series processors (AIX) and Dell PowerEdge servers (Windows). In addition, the group manages and maintains the Enterprise Storage Subsystem (50 + terabytes), the Cerner Database, the UHMC Active Directory, Data backup vaulting, Citrix Server Farm, VMWare (virtualization of servers) and over 200 standalone Windows based servers.

These systems host critical applications such as : Cerner (PowerChart, Pharmacy, OR scheduling), Eclipsys (Patient Case Management), Lawson (Purchasing). Other applications hosted by these systems include Dietary, Nurse Scheduling, Document Automation, Timekeeping, Dental and Report automation system.

It is the mission of the group to ensure high availability of all systems at all times. This is accomplished through performance monitoring, proactive problem resolution, capacity planning, system recovery management and evaluation of new technologies. Current initiatives include sever consolidation, virtualization of systems and centralization data storage.
