About the Program

Stony Brook University Hospital's Nursing Evidence-Based Practice Fellowship program is a 12-month hospital-based scholarly program that pairs nurses with evidence-based practice expert mentors and guides them through the process of designing, implementing and evaluating a practice change.

During the program, Fellows gain expertise in searching and appraising literature and making evidence-based recommendations for practice and make real-world changes that impact nursing practice.

Fellows who are enrolled in any Master's program for Stony Brook School of Nursing have the opportunity to obtain credit, and at the program conclusion will be eligible to apply for EBP-Certificate Holder (CH) designation, accredited by the Accreditation Board for Specialty Nursing Certification (ABSNC) and recognized by Magnet®.

Fellowship Roadmap

The Fellowship begins in April with a 2-day in-person Immersion to work on developing/refining a project idea. From May to August, Fellows search, appraise, and synthesize the literature, developing recommendations for practice change. In September, Fellows develop concrete plans for real-world implementation of the evidence. From October to December, Fellows implement their projects and collect data. From January to March, Fellows analyze their data, develop an abstract and a poster presentation, and optionally attend a review course for the EBP-CH.

A roadway with five milestones: April Immersion (2 days, in-person), May–August literature & synthesis, September implementation planning, October–December implementation, January–March analysis, dissemination, EBP-CH prep. 📍 April Immersion (2 days) 📚 May–Aug Literature & synthesis 🧭 September Implementation planning ⚙️ Oct–Dec Implementation 📈 Jan–Mar Analysis, dissemination, EBP-CH

FAQs

Who is eligible to apply?

Registered nurses at Stony Brook University Hospital or Cancer Center with manager support. Must have at least one year of experience at Stony Brook and must not be enrolled in Nurse Residency program at Fellowship start.

How many Fellows are selected?

Up to 10 Fellows. Fellows work in teams of 2–3 on one project per team.

What is the time commitment?

Immersion (2 days in April) + 11 monthly full-day sessions (Second Thursday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM). Fellows must commit to attending the full 2-day Immersion in person. Fellows must make every effort to attend the monthly Fellowship days. Virtual makeups may be arranged on a case-by-case basis in collaboration with the Program Director.

Do I need a project idea to apply?

Yes. Applicants do not need a full project proposal but must be able to describe a practice problem that they would potentially want to address during the program.

How do I obtain SBUSON Master’s Program credit?

Students who are enrolled in a Stony Brook University School of Nursing (SBUSON) Master’s Degree program may be eligible to obtain credit for the program, which would be applied to the HNG 541 Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Practice I course. This course is required as part of all SBUSON Master’s degree programs. As part of the Fellowship, nurses create a portfolio showcasing their work. This is submitted to SBUSON to demonstrate content mastery. Fellows then may “buy out” the credit from SBUSON at a discounted rate. For specific questions, please contact the Fellowship Program Director at meghan.doelger@stonybrookmedicine.edu.
